Holiday DUI Crackdown - police arrest 12, issue 180 tickets in one city


Police say an increase in patrols over the Christmas and New Year’s holiday led to five arrests for drunken driving and 180 tickets issued for motor vehicle violations.

The extra patrols were paid for through a grant from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety program, “Drive Sober or get Pulled Over.”

The Breakdown:

On Saturday, Dec. 15, at 12:57a.m., Jaimin Patel, 41, of Monmouth Junction was arrested for driving under the influence after his 2002 Honda Civic went off the road into a drainage ditch on Riva Avenue. He was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for treatment. He was later charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, failing to maintain a lane.

On Sunday, Dec. 16, at 1:30 a.m., Ashley Gunther, 26, of North Brunswick was arrested following a car accident. Officers responded to the intersection of Friendship Road and New Road for a vehicle that struck a utility pole. At the location officers found a 2010 white Subaru on the front lawn of a home with heavy front-end damage, but no driver. Gunther had been driven by a friend to Princeton University Hospital. She was charged with driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, driving an unregistered vehicle, careless driving, and having an open container of alcohol in the vehicle.

On Thursday, Dec. 20, at 8:11 p.m., Chandresh Chitalia, 47, of East Brunswick was arrested after a hit-and-run accident. Chitalia allegedly struck a motorcyclist on Cranbury Road at the intersection of Davidson Mill Road. East Brunswick police stopped Chitalia on Cranbury Road in their township with the motorcycle still under his vehicle. He was charged with driving under the influence, assault by auto and endangering the welfare of an injured person. He was taken to the Middlesex County jail.

On Friday, Dec. 28, at 11:26 p.m., Wendy Urena, 30, of New York was arrested following a motor vehicle stop. Sergeant Michael Lapoint stopped Urena, who was driving a 2011 gray Nissan that police say was speeding on Route 1. After sobriety tests, Urena was arrested. Urena was charged with driving under the influence, refusal to take a breathalyzer, careless driving, speeding, and failure to maintain a lane.

On Sunday Dec. 30, at 1:06 a.m., Thomas Spiecker, 18, of Sayreville was arrested following a motor-vehicle stop. Officer Georg Vit stopped Spieckler after he allegedly made an illegal U-turn on Cranbury Road and pulled into the Sunoco gas station. Spieckler was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, underage drunk driving, careless driving, illegal U-turn, and no insurance.
