DUI arrest for Peter Murphy one of the godfathers of goth-rock

Frontman Peter Murphy age 55, of the godfathers of goth-rock,  arrested Saturday after rear-ending a vehicle in Glendale, injuring the driver and then fleeing to Los Angeles, where he was apparently blocked by an eyewitness until police arrived.

Murphy, 55, is said to have hit a Mercedes with his Subaru Forester at the intersection of Centrel and Goode avenues, but then reportedly drove around the other car and got on the Ventura Freeway.

A witness who was washing windows at the time snapped a photo of his automobile, which had sustained some front-end damage, as he drove away. The driver of the car he allegedly hit also jotted down his license plate number as he sped off.

The man who followed him to Barham Boulevard in L.A. did so because he "was afraid (Murphy) would kill someone with his driving," according to police.

Upon being detained, police noted that Murphy appeared "very confused" and had trouble recalling the day and time. He denied drinking alcohol that day, admitting only to having taken prescription pills for depression and having been in volved in a traffic collision.

But while inside the patrol car, officers reported discovering a small plastic bag, possibly filled with methamphetamine. According to the Glendale News-Press, Murphy denied that the bag belonged to him, though officers believed he was attempting to discard it.

He was arrested on suspicion of causing injuries while driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, felony hit-and-run and possessing methamphetamine, police said.

As of Monday afternoon, he was still being held in Glendale in lieu of $500,000 bail.
