Apple Pays Out $53 Million For Water Damage Lawsuit


The plaintiffs in this class-action lawsuit claimed that Apple instructed its retail store employees to deny warranty coverage for products that sustained liquid damage.

This isn’t anything new: many tech companies have strict policies for water damage in their products to prevent consumer abuse.

However, it appears that the small strips of paper within every Apple product – paper that changes color when exposed to water, verifying the device’s cause of death and voiding the warranty – have also been known the change colors when the iPhone or iPod was subject to moisture or humidity in the air during normal use.

Apple vehemently denied these claims, refusing to honor the warranty of their consumers. However, it was finally decided that Apple was to pay for the damaged products, resulting in a $53 million paycheck made out to about 150,000 members of the class-action lawsuit, each eligible to receive about $300.

This isn’t Apple’s first time getting involved in class-action trouble – CEO Tim Cook was forced to apologize to Chinese consumers on the grounds that Apple was discriminating against the Chinese as well as supplying them with shoddy products.
