DUI for Milwaukee Brewers Yovani Gallardo
Milwaukee Brewers all-star pitcher Yovani Gallardo was arrested Tuesday morning and cited with drunken driving, Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Fran McLaughlin told ESPN Wisconsin.
Gallardo, a 27-year-old right-hander, was driving westbound on Interstate 94 near S. 76th St. when he was pulled over at 2:10 a.m. for driving slowly and deviating lanes. McLaughlin said Gallardo failed a field sobriety test and later registered a blood-alcohol level of .22, nearly three times the legal limit in Wisconsin (.08).
Brewers officials released a statement shortly after 11 a.m. It read:
“We have been made aware of the situation with Yovani and we take this matter very seriously. We have expressed our disappointment to him and know he understands that behavior of this nature is of great concern to everyone in the organization. Yovani has acknowledged the seriousness of this incident and is taking full accountability for his actions.”
McLaughlin said Gallardo -- who has no prior criminal record -- will not face jail time but will receive citations of $300 for operating while intoxicated -- first offense, with an extra $300 because of the level of intoxication and $178.80 for lane deviation.
Gallardo is believed to be the first active Brewers player arrested for drunk driving since first baseman John Jaha was arrested in Elm Grove in May, 1998. Jaha, who was on the disabled list with a foot injury, had spent the evening at the Ground Round restaurant on Mayfair Rd. in Wauwatosa.
