Newsflash from your Hollywood Attorney: San Diego Mayor Bob Filner Pleads Guilty with Felony False Imprisonment, Battery - 3 Counts in Harassment Case

Newsflash from your Hollywood Attorney:

Former San Diego Mayor Bob Filner, driven from office by sexual harassment allegations, was charged Tuesday with felony false imprisonment and two counts of misdemeanor battery involving three women.

The felony count alleges false imprisonment "by violence, fraud, menace and deceit" but does not elaborate on the circumstances.

The victims were identified only as Jane Does.

Filner, 71, resigned in late August, succumbing to intense pressure after at least 17 women brought lurid sexual harassment allegations against the former 10-term congressman. He had been on the job less than nine months into a four-year term and was San Diego's first Democratic mayor in 20 years.

San Diego County sheriff's investigators had been interviewing Filner's accusers and said they would deliver their findings to the attorney general's office for possible prosecution. The state attorney general's office confirmed in August that it launched a criminal investigation.

Filner attorney Jerry Coughlan did not respond to a request for comment after the San Diego Superior Court issued a two-sentence statement describing the charges. A hearing was scheduled for 10 a.m. PDT at the downtown courthouse, only three blocks from the City Hall office that Filner occupied until stepping down Aug. 30.

Filner's former communications director, Irene McCormack Jackson, was the first woman to go public with allegations against Filner and filed a lawsuit against the mayor and the city, claiming her ex-boss asked her to work without panties, demanded kisses, told her he wanted to see her naked and dragged her in a headlock while whispering in her ear.

All nine City Council members as well as fellow Democrats called upon Filner to resign. A recall effort also was launched as more allegations surfaced.

But in a defiant farewell speech, Filner said he was the victim of a lynch mob and believed he would be vindicated if due process was allowed to run its course.

In exchange for his resignation, the city agreed to pay Filner's legal fees in a joint defense of the lawsuit, and cover any settlement costs assessed against the mayor except for punitive damages. The city -- as required by state law -- will also defend Filner against legal actions stemming from other alleged sexual harassment said to have occurred during his nine months in office as mayor.

City Attorney Jan Goldsmith said, however, the city will not represent Filner in any criminal case.

BREAKING: After 50 Years, The Boston Strangler Case Is Solved, Proved Albert DiSalvo Guilty

Newsflash from your Hollywood Attorney:

This Feb. 25, 1967, file photo shows self-confessed Boston Strangler Albert DeSalvo minutes after his capture in Boston. Diane Dodd and son Casey Sherman hold a photo of Dodd's sister Mary Sullivan, who was found strangled in January 1964 and is believed to have been the last victim of the Boston Strangler.

A water bottle recovered from a construction site where Tim DiSalvo – whose uncle Albert DiSalvo had confessed to being the internationally notorious Boston Strangler – gave police the DNA evidence they needed to bring closure to a case that has been a mystery for nearly 50 years, murders for which no one has ever been charged.

"This is really a story of relentlessness,'' Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis explained today as Massachusetts top law enforcement officials revealed that DNA preserved from the body of the Boston Strangler's last victim--raped and murdered in 1964--can now be linked with "99.9 percent certainty" to the late Albert DiSalvo.

"This is good evidence. This is strong evidence. This is reliable evidence,'' Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley said of the new DNA result. "But there can be no doubt."

The Boston Stranger case, which inspired a 1968 Hollywood movie starring Tony Curtis, marked a terrifying swath of history in the city – and one that has long been mired in doubt.

t was the 1960s and single women across Massachusetts were the target of a serial killer and rapist. When it was over, the Boston Strangler had killed 11 women. The case baffled the five separate District Attorney's offices investigating the murders because of the spread-out locations of the victims. Then DiSalvo, a convicted rapist, made a jailhouse confession claiming that he was the Boston Strangler and provided details on the 11 murdered women.

But DiSalvo was never charged in the case and was found dead in his cell under mysterious circumstances at Walpole state prison in 1973. This week investigators will exhume DiSalvo's body from Puritan Lawn Cemetery in Peabody, Mass., to make the final determination with DNA testing.

The strangler's last victim would be 19-year-old Mary Sullivan, strangled with her own stocking in her Beacon Hill apartment on tony Charles Street. She was also sexually savaged.

Her killer left behind seminal fluids that were lifted from a maroon blanket her body was covered with. That remains the only DNA evidence in the entire Boston Strangler investigation: six samples that the Boston Police Crime Lab's lead forensic scientist Robert Hayes preserved as he waited for technology to advance to the point where nuclear DNA could be positively matched to a suspect.

First, police had to make sure the Y-chromosomes in those DNA samples were a familial match to DiSalvo in order to convince a judge to let investigators disturb his grave. So BPD Sgt. Brian Albert, a surveillance expert, followed nephew Tim DiSalvo to his worksite in Boston and retrieved a water bottle he drank from and left behind. It was a match to the samples collected in the 1964 Beacon Hill murder, excluding 99.9 percent of the male population from suspicion in Mary Sullivan's killing, Hayes said, and pointing to Albert DiSalvo with near certainty as the man responsible.

Randy Travis SENTENCED TO REHAB for Drunk Driving

Country singer Randy Travis has been sentenced to 180 DAYS IN JAIL after pleading guilty to drunk driving in Texas. But he probably won't spend a single minute behind bars, because the sentence was probated for 2 years, meaning if he stays out of trouble for 2 years, he can avoid the slammer.

But if Travis runs afoul of the law, officials can bring Travis in to serve out the 180 days.

Travis must also check in to an inpatient alcohol treatment facility for a minimum of 30 days AND complete 100 hours of community service.

Travis must also install an ignition interlock device on any vehicle he drives for 2 years. The IID measures the driver's blood alcohol level and will prevent the engine from starting if the driver is intoxicated.
