Pepsi Plans to REDUCE Levels of the Cancer Chemical “by February 2014

A report released just before July 4th by an environmental group seems to have gotten lost in the holiday weekend haze, despite findings that link cola and cancer. Pepsi (PEP) continues to sell sodas made with 4-methylimidazole, or 4-MEI—ruled a carcinogen last year by the state of California—according to the Center For Environmental Health http://www.ceh.org/one-year-later-pepsi-still-contains-cancer-causing-food-coloring

The nonprofit group noted that Pepsi sold inside California had been reformulated to comply with state rules about the substance, yet drinks sold outside the state continue to include higher amounts of 4-MEI, which helps give the company’s cola drinks their caramel hue. The group found little to no 4-MEI in Coca-Cola (KO), which has switched to a modified caramel coloring.

In a response published in the Center for Environmental Health’s report, PepsiCo said its “coloring suppliers have been working on modifying the manufacturing process to reduce the amount of 4-MEI,” adding that drinks sold in the rest of the U.S. will have reduced levels of the chemical “by February 2014.”

Is it enough to just Reduce the Cancer Chemicals ?

Cancer Cluster at Tyson Plant: USDA Poultry Inspector Speaks Out Against Hazardous Chemical Use

Workers at one plant in Corydon, Ind. are getting sick. Several have been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.

Now, state health officials are trying to determine if there could be a cancer cluster associated with the plant.

“I always start shaking when I do this,” Bill Howard said, pouring a blend of nutrients into a syringe attached to a tube which goes directly into his stomach. “Every two hours. I have four or five cans a day. “

Bill was diagnosed with head and neck cancer in December of 2011, while he was working in the maintenance department at the Tyson chicken processing plant in Corydon, Indiana.

“My life's completely changed,” Howard said, choking back tears.

Bill is not the only Tyson plant worker diagnosed with that type of cancer. Debra Brooks' husband got sick in December 2010.
