Asiana Airlines is planning to sue the Bay Area TV station that broadcast the incorrect names of the pilots on its jet that crash-landed at San Francisco International Airport.
the company will take legal action in the U.S., spokeswoman Lee Hyo-min said in Seoul on Monday, according to Bloomberg. Asiana chose to take "strong steps" to sue KTVU-TV because the report was racially discriminating, Bloomberg reports. The station "seriously damaged" the airline's reputation, the carrier said.
KTVU aired a report Friday that falsely stated that the pilots' names were "Captain Sum Ting Wong," "Wi Tu Lo," "Ho Lee Fuk" and "Bang Ding Ow." The network issued an apology and posted a statement on its website explaining the mistake, but it initially said those names were confirmed by "an NTSB official," who turned out to be an intern.
The NTSB, which Asiana was also considering taking legal action against, also apologized for the "inaccurate and offensive names that were mistakenly confirmed" as those of the crashed jet pilots.
